Thursday Men’s Devotional (Psalm 5)

Our Good God’s blessings to you and all of your loved ones on this Thursday morning, brother!

Read Psalm 5. Selah.

As you read through this beautiful Psalm of David, focus on the overall structure of the psalm – it flows and ebbs, like a majestic movement of classical music.

The psalm opens with several verses that contain important instruction for every Believer – about prayer.  Notice that the psalmist is very direct and deliberate as he approaches the LORD. He appeals to God to hear his words; and consider his meditations.  He acknowledges the LORD as MY King and MY God, very effectively but simply stepping into a personal dialogue with the Almighty One.  In verse 3, David commits to a regular meeting with God, every morning, and says he “will look up” – that is, look to the Only Good God for encouragement and guidance and grace and strength for the day ahead. What a wonderful pattern is described here for each of us – to start our day with deliberate, personal, and expectant prayer to Our King and Our God!

In a dramatic shift, the next 3 verses of the psalm serve to acknowledge that wickedness does exist; and that the LORD Himself will deal with the wicked (vv 6) “You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; The LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.”.

Next, the psalmist tells us that he will pursue the LORD’s presence and His righteousness and His leading even (vv 8) “because of my enemies”!  What a compelling lesson for each of us – when we encounter wickedness, when we face the enemy, our response should be to run to God and to draw even closer to Him!  Wow!

In the next few verses, David petitions the LORD for judgement for those that rebel against Him (vv 10):  “Pronounce them guilty, O God!”.

And in a beautiful conclusion to the passage, David reminds all of us of the goodness and the benefits of loving the Name of the LORD (vv 11-12) “But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You. For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield.”.

My brother, be encouraged today – rejoice and shout for joy; because the LORD Himself defends you and blesses you and favors you and surrounds you with His shield!  Amen!
